"It is the real work of the organization," says Troy, "putting us in touch with the public . Without this very real connection, our work here would be that much more difficult. I get a sense of pride, and a feeling of fulfilment whenever I step into a classroom full of high school students or an alternative educational setting to start talking about sex. It ' s what keeps me going!" Troy has also learned some very valuable facilitation skills that he puts to use whenever he can. Troy also sits on the Board of the Canadian AIDS Society as the Atlantic Regional Director for CAS. He looks forward to the work of the CAS Board, and it 's committees, with joy and a sense of adventure.
Cory Roach - 2008 Walk Coordinator
"I’m 21 years old and from PEI. In 2007 I graduated from the Sport and Leisure Management program at Holland College and decided to continue my education at UNB. I am now entering my 4th year in Kinesiology Recreation to get my Bachelors Degree with a minor in business.
When I choose to take a job I want to make sure that my work will be making a difference in people’s lives. At AIDS PEI I feel that my responsibility of coordinating THE WALK is an opportunity for me to make a difference in Islanders’ lives.
I am a motivated individual who takes great pleasure in enjoying my work and being able to see the results that come from my hard work and of those involved. Being able to see the positives that come out of what I do and knowing that peoples lives are changing for the better is what keeps me going at my job regardless of what it is. Throughout all of my school years I have always been interested in the recreation field and volunteering. I have always been giving a helping hand when setting up an event or organizing something and felt that I needed to be involved.
My most memorable volunteer experience was with the Adventure Group when I was able to sit in and participate in their sessions and take on the role of observer, but also as instructor in some settings. It gave me the opportunity to listen to others and the issues they have to deal with in life and to know that by what I say to them and the Adventure Group that we can jump start their lives going in a better direction.
I find the field of study that I am in suits my personality as I am often seen as being very sociable, talkative, and energetic. I see myself as a real people person and feel that with my education, personality, and energy that I can motivate and make a difference in peoples lives for many years to come."
