AIDS PEI announces partnership to recycle cell phones for dollars

AIDS PEI, the province’s only AIDS service organization, in partnership with the Shelter Alliance based out of the United States, has launched a new fundraising program that also benefits the environment.  The organization has begun a cell phone recycling program where used cell phones donated by island and regional residents are recycled.   AIDS PEI receives anywhere from fifty cents to one hundred dollars for used cell phones.

Executive Director, Mark Hanlon, says the new initiative is an exciting one for PEI.  “As far as we know, we are the only non-profit doing this. Not only does it help us in reaching our goals, but it’s great for the environment.”  The program accepts older and newer model phones with batteries.  The cell phones are appraised by the Shelter Alliance group and funds are disbursed to AIDS PEI.

AIDS PEI is also pleased to work with GBS Communications, the authorized dealers for the three Telus locations in Prince Edward Island to faciliate the collection of cell phones in addition to Habitat for Humanity at 365 Mount Edward Rd.

Used cell phones can be dropped off or mailed to the AIDS PEI office located at 144 Prince Street, Charlottetown, C1A 4R6.  Additionally, donors can drop off their used cell phones to any of the following GBS Communications/Telus Mobility dealers:

  • Habitat for Humanity Restore, 365 Mount Edward Rd.
  • Charlottetown Mall Telus authorized dealer location
  • Kirkwood Mews Telus authorized dealer location
  • County Fair Mall, Summerside Telus authorized dealer location
